This could be an autoimmune disease or have an infectious cause, and symptoms can come on suddenly. If not treated aggressively and quickly she could die. The results showed severe meningoencephalitis, in other words inflammation of the brain and the tissue surrounding it. As you all know we love our dogs like they are our children, so of course we did what we needed to do. Explained that in order to diagnose what is going on in her brain they needed to hospitalize her for an MRI and spinal tap, along with some additional testing which alone is upwards of $2200(that's with my Veterinary Technician discount!). She was declining quickly and we needed answers. She started stumbling and walking into things, we wasted no time and brought her to the neurologist. About 7 days after treatment the symptoms came back but this time much more dramatic. She did well on a short course of steroids and we thought her "back pain" had resolved. After normal bloodwork and xrays we attributed it to back pain or neck strain. It started two weeks ago she developed strange symptoms excessive swallowing and what seemed to be ataxia/balance issues, and decreased appetite.
